Inca
ReplyDeleteThe Incas are fascinating in a variety of ways, but I am expecially intrigued by their road system. By the mid 1400s, they had over 15,000 miles of roads connecting close to 2,000 miles of territory in the Andes Mountains in modern day Peru and Chile. Impressive! They carved roads through extremely rugged terrain. The raoads were an essential component to the Incas forming an empire.
I am also fascinated by their amazing stone structures. With the most basic of tools (and no horse or wheel), they created masterpiece structures that have lasted for hundreds of years.

ReplyDeleteYou have good detail about the Inca roads. I liked how you explained it well. I noticed you had one spelling error. Maybe next time you should spell check in Word and then paste it into the text box.

ReplyDeleteInstead of having roads, the Aztecs had canals. The canals helped them to farm. They had a complex irrrigation system.

Aztec
ReplyDeleteThe Aztecs were a very powerful and interesting empire but what fascinates me most is the way their community is organized. In the middle of the city the king or the ruler lives. The king is held responsible for law, trade, tribute, and warfare. Then there are the warriors and the priests . Below the warriors and priests the merchants and artisans lived. At the very bottom in the lower class the farmers and laborers lived. The farmers and laborers had to pay the king money and some of their crops and therefore found it hard to live sometimes. While the lower class payed the king, the warriors and priests wore the best clothing and had many advantages. They didn't have to pay the king and ate well every night. The Aztecs were a very powerful and amazing empire.

DeleteI agree with you that the Aztecs were a powerful empire, but sometimes they misused their power and sacrificed many people. Sometimes as many as 10,000 people per year!

ReplyDeleteThe Inca were a very interesting group of people. There culture had to main social classes. The upper class was made up of the emperor, government officials, and priests. Farmers, artistans, and servants.
The Incas did not have slaves as they did not belive in slavery. Most of the Incas were farmers and grew maize and peanuts.

I agree with Dominic, they are very interesting, I'm surprised how organized they were so long ago.

ReplyDeleteYou had very good details about the Aztec community. As the Aztec lived in temples, the inca lived in seprate households. Also the Inca were divided into different classes.

ReplyDeleteThe Aztec built water canals to travel easier. They used those canals to get from place to place faster and easier for trading. They gardened on floating gardens called chinampas. The kids went to school. If they solved riddles it showed that the payed attention in school.
If traveled back in time I would like to visit the Inca. I would like to visit them because they did not believe in human sacrifice.

ReplyDeleteYour fact was interesting but you could say more about the canals and talk about other things. I thought it was to short.

Aztecs
ReplyDeleteIf I could time travel, I would want to travel back in time to the time of the Aztecs. Most likely because I want to see the canals, floating gardens, and how the city was organized. Was the city split into different parts; as in the warriors in one part, and the farmers in another? This intrigues me to learn more, but what I do know is that the canals where used as transportation. They transported cloth, food and every day materials through the canals to sell at the market. Another thing that is interesting is their buildings. They didn’t use lots of tools because they didn’t have them like you and me today. They carved lots of detail in to the temples and other statues. It’s too bad we can not time travel today; it would be so cool to see stuff like that.
Kianna W.
I agree with Kianna, the canals, floating gardens, and cities would be cool to see, but they sacrificed a lot, so I would travle back in time to the Incas.
DeleteSarah N.
Dominic M.
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting how you said that the Inca didn’t believe in slavery. The Aztecs would go to war, and instead of killing people they would enslave them in tell it was their turn to be sacrificed. It shows there that they were very different in what they believed.
Kianna W.
Aztec
ReplyDeleteThe Aztec were very strong and inteligent.Their structures were sturdy and very durable with patterns and art decorating the palaces and temples. The trade of gems, precious metals, cloaks, cotton, and food boosted their economy. They had a system of causeways and canals to get around the city. The Aztec farmers grew their crops on floating islands because of lack of land to farm on.

DeleteI think you had very nice details about the Aztecs way of life. I liked how you added fascinating things about the Aztecs, instead of just saying, " They made cool houses. The Aztecs traded and the Aztecs grew their food on things that float."
You had a great, interesting, strong, intelligent, piece about the Aztecs. Good job.

ReplyDeleteYou had lots of interesting facts, I also agree with you on visiting the Inca. They only sacrificed food and other items, never people.

Inca
ReplyDeleteThe Incas were very creative. They created there own clothing. They got there cloth by the llamas. They woven it together. They wasn't as mean as the Mayas or Aztecs. They only sacrificed food, cloth, and other items.

Inca
ReplyDeleteI would also like to time travel back to the time of the Inca because they rarely sacrifice humans and they are very rich in culture.

I thought that it was very interesting when the Maya pierced their tongues and skin to offer their blood to the gods because when we pierce our ears and skin, we don't lose any blood. But then, of course, we have special tools to pierce our ears and skin, but the Maya only had sharp rocks to pierce their skin. It must have hurt a lot! I also found it interesting that the Maya sacrificed prisoners instead of someone from their own city. The Maya also ripped out their sacrificed person's heart and offered it to the gods just like the Aztec.

ReplyDeleteKatie, I thought about what you said about the way the society is made up of different levels. The very top level was the king, the next level was the priest and noble warriors, below them were the artisans and merchants and below them were the workers and farmers. The Aztec levels are the same as the Inca. The Inca also had to pay their ruler, but mostly in clothes, food and other goods. The king in the Inca empire wasn't responsible for as much as the Aztec king.
Raine F.W
Raine F.W
ReplyDeleteI agree that they had to pay their ruler, but the Aztecs pay their ruler with blood. Also they pay the king with their corn and crops that they grow. The Aztec king or fake king was just a lieing cheapskate that was fooling the Aztecs for their profits. So actually all of the other rulers were more responsible than the Aztec king.
Sydney.R
I like what you said about that they did have a ruler and they gave the ruler there corn and crops. I also like what you said about all of the rulers were responsible for the Aztec king.
DeleteGood job Sydney.
Izzy.C
Aztecs often got sacrificed for there heart.Aztecs rather by sacrificed then die in war because they would by king so it was a blessing to get sacrificed. The Aztecs would stab them with nifes and riped they heart out then they burn it to the gods and some times they cook the boty then eat it.

Inca
ReplyDeleteI thought it was fascinating how the Incas first started as a small village, but then in the 1400's a ruler named Pachacuti started to expand the territory of the Incas. Many rulers followed in his footsteps. In the late 1500's the Incas territory was huge. The Incas stretched from what is now Ecuador to Chile.Their capital, Cuzco, is now Peru. While the Mayas and especially the Aztecs sacrificed people the Incas sacrificed crops or food. 1/3 of the crops went to the gods, 1/3 of the crops went to the emperor and 1/3 of the crops went to the people. Wow they must have spent a lot of time farming! They sacrificed one person here or there, but not very often.
Mackenzie C.
Azects
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I mostly learned about and that was most fasanating was the early culture of the Azects. The Azects were the most intriguing topic in my opinon. The best thing about the Azects were how they worshipped there gods. Like the Sun God,Moon Good. Each God is Fed,Worshipped in their own personal way.
Maya
ReplyDeleteI am surprised the Maya's were able to build large cities in the year 200 A.C.E. Also only 50 years later they were at the height of power between 250 and 900 A.C.E. During the Maya's time of power I think it's interesting that the Maya's ruled 40 large cities and each had its own government and king.
Marty S.
Wyatt G.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you I to think they had the coolest structures, but I would priest I would stand away from the sacrificing and never do it.

Maya
ReplyDeleteI thought that it was amazing how the mayas start at one to 40 cities. They also got those 40 cities from trading. They got the goods from trading routes. Like lowlands they would find good trading goods like cotten and cacao, which is the sourse of chocolate. Also the lowlands crops didn't grow to well. The highlands had trading stones such as Jade and Obsidian.
I have learned about so many new things. Things like sacrifice, gods, religons, and cultures.

The Azects
ReplyDeleteThe Azects were very religes, and had meny richuwales. They sacrifised meny people to ther gods and it was consiterd an ouner to be sacrofised.Every 52 years the would light a fire inside someone and if the fire didn't light the worled was going to end.
They lived on an island in the middle of a lake. They were toled to buled ther city were they foned a egle slaing a snake on a cactis.
Inca
ReplyDeleteIf I could time travel back to when the early cultures of America existed, and choose which culture to live with, I would choose the Incas. These are a very interesting group of peaople. Unlike the Aztec and the Maya, the Incas did not believe in human sacrafice. Instead they sacrafice not a human... but simple crops.
The Incas did not practice slavery so all Incas (excluding the emporer) were treated as equal.

Mayas
ReplyDeleteOut of the Maya's and the Aztec's I would rather travel back in time to the Maya's. Why I would want to do that is because the Maya's serve their gods, kings, and the kings priests but, they're honored to do that. I think that getting to honor your gods, kings , and priests is a big honor! I also like that they live in small villages, it kind of reminds me of Steamboat in 1985-1987.
I really like the Maya's because it seems homey but, with a little kick to it.
Maggie M.
Maggie
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that honoring kings is a big. How did you know what steam bout was like in 1985-1987.
Mayas
ReplyDeleteMaggie, I would have also preffered the Maya's. I agree with all of your reasons as well. Another reason is because i think the Maya's are more peaceful while the Aztecs are much more violent and aggressive. The only unfortunate part would be the risk of being sacrificed, although the Maya's thought of that as a great honor.

Aztecs

I would like to see the tradition they do where they try to light a fire in someones heart. That would be super facinating to me.

Mayans
ReplyDeleteYes I agree! The Mayan culture is the culture most fascinating to me. Their cities were connected by vast trade routes and all kinds of goods were traded, like Obsidian, a shiney black stone treasured for its sharp edges. they are also very spiritual and close to their gods.
Will C.
Raine F.W.
ReplyDeleteYes unbelievable that the Mayans could cut out a persons heart as a blood sacrifice to the gods but be smart and civilized enough to create beautiful cities, a calendar, system of mathematics and study and use astrology.
Will C.
Mayans
ReplyDeleteDo you think the Mayans had an advanced and civilized culture or were thye brutal savages?
Will C.
Aztec
ReplyDeleteAztec made many sacrifices, up to 10,000 people per year. The Aztecs were brutal people. They invaded areas and took prisoners to sacrifice. The Aztecs had lots of slaves. The Aztecs built the city Tenochtitlán on a lake. They made rafts tied to trees to farm and make garden. The made 3 causeways to get around.
T.J. O
Hanna S.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would agree with that because I do not like slavery and do not believe in slavery. I also liked that everyone was treated equally (except for the king). I also like how they made very many roads to send messages and warn the king of what was happening.

Mayas-
ReplyDeleteSomething that I found interesting about the mayan culture is that they beleived in four gods. The Creator god, the Sun god, the Moon goddes, and the Maize (or corn) god. Each god controlled a different part of everyday life. Some gods brought good things, while others brought things that could be harmful. No matter what the god brought, the mayas would always try to please them by piercing some skin or their tounge.

Incas
ReplyDeleteI am fascinated how the Inca's developed their own language called Quechua. I would imagine that to come up with your own language would be a bit difficult. All official business had to be done in Quechua. It is amazing how the language has carried on for so many century's. Some people in Peru still speak Quechua. Huq Kutikama!(Good bye in Quechua).
Keelan V.
I agree that it would be hard to come up with your own language, especially all those years ago. I am also fascinated that the businesses all talk in that language. I especially liked how you said good bye in Quechua.
Delete- Jake B.
Kianna W.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kianna about traveling back in time with the Aztecs. I would love to see the floating gardens. The only thing I'm hesitant about is having to be sacrificed. That doesn't sound like much fun at all.
Keelan V.
I would want to go back in time to the Mayan culture. With all the achievements of the Mayan people I would like to see the similarities between their culture and ours. Their achievements seem like the start of our culture. We still use a 365 day calendar. Creating a number system that allowed complex calculations may be the reason we have computers today. By creating a writing a writing system they could record history and pass on information.
ReplyDeleteHannah M.
I think it would be interesting to be an Aztec because they were very different. A tradition they had was every year they would bring baskets of corn and gold to the king. I don’t know why . I think it was to celebrate a good year. Also the Aztecs had a enormous trading network to trade goods, gold and food. I really think that it was bad that more war , tribute and trade made the king more wealthy. My favorite fact is that the Aztecs were the first farmers! That is so cool. I really had a wonderful time learning about the early Americas and hope the 6th graders next year will enjoy it as much as I did.
ReplyDeleteBella S.
Wyatt G.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Wyatt that the Aztecs had cool city structures and I would like to see the floating gardens. The thing I don't agree that being a warrior would be better because if you get captured you become a slave and get sacrificed.
Hannah M.
I definitely agree with Hannah M. I agree with her because first of all I would not want to be sacrificed by the Aztecs. Second, she has a great point of saying that we still use their 365 days a year calender, I think it would be cool to go back and see what it was like back then and see how and why the Mayas made the 365 day calender. It would also be cool to go back in time and see the Inca empire. Although, living as an Inca I would not want to be to powerful because I would not want to be removed from the city by the ruler named Pachacuti. The culture I would least want to visit would be the Aztec culture. The reason for this is because I might have to attend one of their religious ceremonies (a sacrificial one). They strongly believed in sacrificing humans to their gods and I have nothing against that but I personally think it would be slightly disturbing to witness one of them. It would be very fun to visit any of the empires and great for science to!

The Aztecs
ReplyDeleteThe Aztecs were an amazing culture but there are a couple things about them that intrigues me. The Aztecs were farmers that migrated north America to central America. In 1325 the Aztecs started building their capital while conquering nearby towns. War was a key element to the Aztec people. The Aztecs declined in the 1500s ; they were conquering by the Spaniards. Some people still continued the Aztec culture today.
Miles B
Wyatt G.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Wyatt that a warrior would definitely be treated a lot better and the Spanish did eventually be conqucred.
Inca
ReplyDeleteIf I would go back in time i would go to the Incas because they didn't sacerfice people, but they did have a very unique road sistem and their ruler would have cool names like Earthquake.
David LaPointe
P.S the one obve is my too.
Keelan V.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Keelan the Incas must have been put up with quite a chalange making up their own language. The Incas and mayas have quite a lot in common.
Miles B.
The Aztecs
ReplyDeleteThe Aztecs made human sacrifices. They would cut open a persons chest and take the heart out while it was still beating, sometimes they would even eat it. An interesting fact I'd that the Aztec people didn't always live in the city of Tenochtitlan before they settled there they used to live in a city called Aztlán. The aztecs traveled for a long time to find a better home a d they settled into the valleys of Mexico. Another thing is that when Spain encountered he Aztecs they thought that the spanish people were returning gods because they were riding on horses. Unlike other natives the Aztecs sacrificed humans the most.
Lucia U.
Natalie S.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Natalie because the Maya had a lot of gods. I find it fascinating that they built a calendar out of stone but never finished it and now people believe that the world is going to end.

Aztecs
ReplyDeleteI thought it was very interesting that like the Maya, the Aztecs worshiped gods such as a creator god,a sun god, moon goddess and a maize god. To please these gods the Aztecs made regular human sacrifices. Most victims were slaves or battle captives. The Aztecs sacrificed as many as 10,000 people a year and was constantly in battle with neighboring cities to gain more sacrificial captives. Something facinating I learned about the Aztecs was even though they may have seemed very brutal, in their hearts they had a soft spot for art and beauty.

Aztecs-
ReplyDeleteOne thing that thought was interesting about the Aztecs was there sacrifices. Some people were very honored to get sacrificed. You would think that today when you die it would be quick and painless death. In the Aztecs you would in a very painful and unique death. A couple ways that the Aztecs would die is they would put the person on a step, stretch them out, take rope tie it tight to cut off their circulation. After that, they will take a sharp knife and cut it right through them. They would skin them alive, take out there heart, and clean them out. They will put their heart back in their body after its cleaned out. Then they will catch the body on fire. If it doesn't catch on fire the Aztecs think that they will die in the next 52 years. If the body does catch on fire, the Aztecs believe that they will be alive for another 52 years.
Maggie M.
Aztecs-
ReplyDeleteI am fascinated in how they put on tattoos on, especially that it was that long ago. It is surprising how far they have come with piercings and tattoos. That long ago they just used rocks to make their tattoos. It must have hurt a lot to put on tattoos. I also am really interested that how warriors and others had different color tattoos, the fighters had red and black tattoos. They lost their blood to offer it to the gods and now we just get tattoos and piercings, I guess to get it. But we have better tools used in the process of getting those tattoos and piercings.
- Jake B.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you that the Aztecs thought it was an honor to be sacrificed. But now it is kind of hard to think that it was an honor to be sacrificed and have a slow and painful death. when they were sacrificed I wonder if they were being sacrificed to one god or all of them.

Aztec-
ReplyDeleteThe Aztecs were fascinating people, but what I am mostly fascinated is their ways of life. The Aztecs encountered war, trade, and keeping the king satisfied.
The Aztecs were ruled by a emperor in Mesoamerica. To keep the king happy, they sent many baskets of corn. They had to dig gold for him, too.
War was big in the Aztec culture. The Aztecs fought violently to the people they conquared. The material that came from conquering people was viral in their culture.
The Aztecs had a huge trading route system. Merchants carried goods or materials to and from the Aztec empire. Some merchants were spies letting the emperor know about the land.
There are fascinating things about the Aztecs, especially their ways of life. People today can learn so much about the ancient people of the past.
- Parker D.
Aztecs-
ReplyDeleteI read something about a floating garden that Aztecs would make. The gardens were called Chinampa. They were built on a shallow lake. They would fence an area out with "wattle." The garden was about 30 ft. long and 8 ft. wide. After that they would layer it with mud, lake sediment and decaying plants. Then they would plant trees in the corner to secure the Chinampa. The Chinampa were separated by channel wide enough for canoes to pass through. These gardens would produce up to ten crops per year.
Mac S.
Daniel, I also thought it was cool the Aztecs made popcorn. I wonder since they had llamas if they could make butter from the milk to put on the popcorn.
ReplyDeleteMac S.
If were to go back in time i would love to meet one of the early cultures like the Incas or Mayas but I'd really not want to join the Aztecs. They'd probably kill me to like the rain god did you know that a kid would be suffered and made to cry before i was killed but they only did it to 5-6 year olds. I was amazed by how smart the Aztecs were as Z said they kill 100'000 people a year just by sacrifice and the Incas only gave food. I don't get it.

Maya
ReplyDeleteI thought it was really cool that our everyday food goes as far back to the Mayans. What I thought was fascinating was a game the Mayas played. They could only use their heads, shoulders, or hips to bounce a heavy rubber ball through stone rings attached high on the court walls. The winners got jewels and clothing, but the losers were often killed. Their belief system is very different than ours. They worshipped many gods. They believed each one controlled a different aspect of daily life. The gods could be either helpful or harmful. If I could travel I would go to the Mayans. I would go there because they were not like the Aztecs and I would not want to be sacrificed. Also, they seemed real cool because of the many different things they did, especially making popcorn!

Its intresting that most of the foods that we have today is the same foods that they had bake thousands of years ago, but with less sodiom

Inca-
ReplyDeleteThe Incas are fastancing people, but I am more interested about where they were located.
The Incas lived in South America, mostly in Peru. Their capital was Cuzco. They weren't always this way. The Incas first started out as a small tribe in the Andes, but soon grew into a huge tribe along what is now Ecudor and Chile. The Incas encountered thick rainforests, snowy mountains, coastal desert, and feritle valleys. Roughly twelve million people was in the Inca civilization. Their ruler was named Pachacuti. The Incas had a strong government. I am amazed in how the Incas survived or lived in such grand evironments.

ReplyDeleteI studied the Maya in class and you had a very good discription of what they did every day. I also liked how your word choice and ending!

Aztecs-
ReplyDeleteI found the Aztecs to be a very interesting culture. The most common way they conquered land was warfare. They also controled a large trade system with merchants. To get around, they built water canals that crisscrossed the city. For rituals, they made lightly colored items that they would wear. They were also big on human sacrafice. They believed that the gods needed human sacrafice to live on.

The Incas were a very hard working and larg enpier, thier king was almost treted like a god, every day, they dresed him in new cloths and burned the old ones. They lived in the anddys mountans. they had thousands of miles of roads, and their empier streched from the tip of Chily to Peru.

There are many interesting things about the early cultures.
ReplyDeleteI thought that it was very interesting that the Mayas grew avocados and squash. It facinating that the Aztecs had ten million people in Tenotechlan and they were wiped out so quick. In the Maya territory they had monkeys which they would hunt and eat. The Inca almost did everything with wool. There is much to learn about the early cultures.

I have gained lot's of knowledge on the early american's culture. There has been many interesting things about their way of life that have shocked me. Things are very different now and i think it would be hard for me to live the way they did.Something that had shocked me was that the Maya's ate monkeys! I had thought that it was very cool how the Inca's had raised llamas and had used their wool for blankets and to keep warm.
ReplyDeleteKolie P.
Kolie- I liked how you described the how interesting the ways of life are to you. Since I'm not a Maya, I had no clue that they ate monkeys! That was a thriller for me! I like your word choice in the begging as in gained lots of knowledge. You also compared our life to theirs, which makes a unique outlook.

ReplyDeleteI thought the game that the Mayans played was very interesting. One thing is that the winners got jewels and gold but, the losers sometimes got killed. Another thing is that the rules were very strict like they could only use there hips, shoulders, and heads to hit the ball.

I was very surprised on how alike our lives were to theirs. I mean, sure, they didnt have technology, which we seem to be helpless without, but they got along perfectly- they even had better quality buildings! A few CRAZY theories I would have never suspected: The Aztecs merchants were used as Spies! how shocking is that! The Mayas wore colorful, feathery robes and held glittery gold and silver treasures- I must've been born there. Those are my facts but i would like to apologize to Ms.Chapman-Hoy for getting this in late- I was so exited for the weekened it totally blew my mind- thank goodness my mom remembered!

I would like to be an Inca for multiple reasons. They don't sacrafice people. I understand it's an honor, but it's a safer culture just with sacraficing food and other goods. The Incas were probably the most peacefull culture. No lose and die ball games, no making kids cry before they kill them just for rain, just settle peace. It would take some getting used to, moving from laptops to stone slabs, but it also wouldn't be so different. I mean, they all have jobs, and the occasional child gets some sort of education, they follow somoenes orders and rules, they have towns, roads, markets, and maybe a pet, and they are normal human beings with enemies, such as the Spanish.

Inca
ReplyDeleteThe Incas are very fasinating, unlike the Mayas and the Aztecs the Incas didn't sacrifice humans instead they sacrificed llamas and food.If I was to travel back in time I would go to the Inca Empire and hopefully become a person of higher status so I could lay in the sun of Machu Pichu.

The Incas are a very intreasting tribe, they didn`t sacrifce the human body they sacrificed some of there crops. Anther thing they had was 2,000 miles of roads in the Andes they had messegers run these road every day to give a empire messeges from a anther empire.

ReplyDeleteI like yours because you put a lot of detail into this and a lot of thought. Keep it up and I like the Incas myself.
